Our Training Philosophy

At Dog's World Training, we are focused on creating the best results for your dog through operant conditioning, a model proposed by B.F. Skinner. The basic concept is that a stimulus leads to a behavior, which leads to a consequence. There are both positive and negative reinforcers in this method of training. With behavior being operant, the chances of the behavior happening again in the future will be determined by environmental stimulus, the response of the dog, and how the handler responds to the behavior.

There are four quadrants of behavioral influence:

Positive Reinforcement- Adding something good to encourage a specific behavior

Positive Punishment- Adding something unpleasant to decrease a behavior

Negative Reinforcement- Taking away something unpleasant to increase a behavior

Negative Punishment- taking something good away to decrease a behavior

The majority of our training is based on positive reinforcement (90% + in most cases). We teach the dog the expectation before ever adding forms of positive punishment. We utilize all quadrants of behavior to reinforce or deter behavior patterns. Most corrections, such as leash "pops," are used to interrupt a pattern of behavior. The need for correction will depend on the genetics of the dog and the dog's environmental experience. We engage dogs in a more positive behavior with our movement and reward systems. We reinforce what we taught them in training so they have clear guidance about taking the pressure off and revert to positive outlets for their unwanted behavior.

This being said, we employ prong collars, slip leads, and E collars when warranted. We also extensively interview owners to ensure that our recommendations for their dogs are clear.

Our client information form helps us better understand what is needed before the dog is brought for assessment regarding issues in the home. It ensures our services are clear to potential clients before dogs are brought for assessment. Upon in-person assessment of the dog, I give direct feedback, ensuring the dog is in the right program to meet the owner's goals.

We take pride in our fair and clear methods, which result in well-trained and obedient dogs. We work closely with the owner(s) to ensure mutual understanding between the dog and family so they can utilize the training effectively. It is critical that we educate families on the behavioral mechanisms that drive dogs and how we can modify interactions to get the best results.

While the concepts laid out here theoretically seem simple, the implementation of when, how, and where to apply them in dog training is complicated. Please do not attempt these methods without the assistance of a professional. I have 24 years of experience training and working with dogs of all breeds, environmental situations, and genetic dispositions. This experience allows me to teach you how to apply these methods to specific behavioral issues for the best results. If you're interested in one of our programs, feel free to fill out the Client Information Form below.

* while our methods target behavior modification, we consider genetics, health, and development when considering each case.

Experience

2000

2002

I started training Rottweilers for show under the mentorship of Janene Stephens of Mystic Acres Rottweilers in Enumclaw WA.

I volunteered for training classes under Uta, a German dog trainer, who at that time worked at Petco in Lakewood WA. We worked with approximately 10 dogs per class, of differing breeds on basic obedience and engagement.

2003

2006

I eventually immersed myself in rescue in 2003 working independently by picking up stray and abused Pit Bulls in Tacoma WA training and rehoming them to capable homes.

In 2006 I bought my second Rottweiler from Janene Stephens while continuing to rescue and advocate for misunderstood breeds.

2007-2009

I volunteered and was hired with Fresno Bully Rescue which included training, kennel assistance, and was eventually bestowed a brief stint in a Directorial role. At that time we managed 40+ Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes.

During my time in Fresno Bully Rescue i was mentored by very knowledgeable and established women namely Nena Hernandez of Island Rescue Organization now managing Cavite Pit Bulls as well as Tia Torres of Pit Bulls and Parolees and Villalobos Rescue in California. I also had the privilege of attending a Best Friends Seminar in Las Vegas where I attended speeches from animal advocates and behaviorist from all over the U.S.

2011

2012

2014-2019

Founded Animal World Rescue along with a good friend and fellow rescuer Amber Hinkle. In our first year we rescued and rehomed over 100 animals with AWR and have handled numerous behavior modification cases.

I visited the Philippines and did advocacy work in a rural community in the island of Comotes which included education about vaccinations, health, and behavior of dogs.

I moved to the Philippines where I continued my advocacy this time with Island Rescue Organization in Cebu who manages the Cavite Pit Bulls, Lolo Ali Center, and the Busay Center in Cebu City. In that time I also continued to take in private clientele for dog training. I lived on Lolo Ali Rescue center in Barili during my stay in Cebu with 20-30 dogs on average for rescue and adoption. Many were feral street dogs, some with disabilities. I provided assessments, behavior mod, training, and handling on site when needed. Furthermore I spoke at events for educational purposes (mainly Bully events).

2019

2019-Now

I traveled to Holland to transport two aggressive dogs and reunite them with their owner. At this time I had the pleasure of meeting Paul (Django Vom Rottenburg) and Jolita Driessen who brought me to working fields and advised me about dog sport and alternative methods that can be used in the field.

I currently reside in Dumaguete, Philippines taking on private clients for all behavioral problems and breeds.

I am also attending Silliman University for my BS biology degree. I'm on the verge of my thesis proposal and very much looking forward to publishing research in the field. What I have learned studying the biology of organisms helps me to asses your family pet to implement the most fair and effective training program for your dog.

In 2022 I also had the privilege of being approved to adopt a former police dog who was not social enough for the job. Ramos was entrusted to me by a 30 year working decoy (Paul) and a police officer  named Jana Hodel who competes in world competitions and trains for the police department in Switzerland. They taught me about Ramos, his training, and his capacity for the work. I also had the pleasure to learn many methods in which he was trained. We gained a mutual resect and friendship though the love of Ramos. I have a lot of gratitude for their time, friendship, and the trust with such a serious dog. Ramos is currently is living his best life in the Philippines and still works with private decoys and trains for the purposes of competing in Mondioring.
